Full Central Security System
The OCS central scanning system blocks email viruses to and from our subscribers very effectively and efficiently. We are currently blocking an average of more than 16 million viruses, spam, and phishing attempts every month!
These services are free to our subscribers.
All email destined to or from our network must first pass through our central scanning system, where it is checked and scrubbed when necessary before being passed along. This process delays the arrival or departure of your email by an average of a mere 30-60 seconds per message, depending on volumes at different times of the day.
But what then about an infected CD, DVD or thumb drive you might slip directly into your computer? Or viruses designed to activate transparently and immediately when you click on a web page? Or those transmitted via chat sessions or news groups or along with music or videos or other file downloads?
Or web-based email you send and receive via other sources, such as Yahoo or Gmail? These methods use your browser rather than your email program, so messages do not pass through our email scanning system. The same situation exists if you subscribe to email via an ISP mail service other than OCS.
And of course, no virus scanner can be 100% reliable. When a new virus emerges it must first be detected by central security labs, who then add a detector to their library and issue an update. During this window in time it is possible for a virus to slip through undetected.
All of these potential points of entry are vulnerable if you're not doing something about it at your end. Your entire home or office network can easily be devastated by viruses that bypass email security.
Not that long ago, many of our customers considered these issues more an annoyance than a potentially significant threat to their business. But as our common reliance on computers increases steadily, this kind of risk is no longer acceptable.
At OCS, our internal office network is protected by a combination of defenses. First and foremost, our "outer firewall" is essentially the gateway over the moat and through the castle walls. The OCS firewall is formidable, thanks to tireless and astute attention by our company's network engineers.
Next, we protect our inner network with what we call OfficeScan. In addition to the other methods of risk described above, our office is especially susceptible given that customers bring computers which may be infected into our shop for service. While working on these machines, we must ensure that they don't manage to infect our network.
OfficeScan provides advanced corporate security. A dedicated server in the OCS Network Center communicates automatically with Trend Micro global security labs on a continuous 24x7 basis. Whenever new virus protection information is posted, it is immediately downloaded to our security server. In turn, computers on our office network poll this central server continuously and fetch any new "pattern" information as soon as it is received.
Email scanning. Firewall. OfficeScan. This overall blanket of security services has effectively protected the entire OCS network for a long time.
Now, we can also extend OfficeScan coverage out to our wireless subscribers. A small "client" program is installed on each computer at your end, which in turn performs the automated communication with our central OfficeScan server. That's all there is to it. No updates to install, no popups or renewal reminders to overlook or forget.
The cost for this protection is only $5 per machine per month, whether you're a business or residence. In most cases this is less than the equivalent cost of doing it yourself with annual updates to Symantec or McAfee or other subsrciption products, and it is definitely much less hassle.
Thanks to OfficeScan, the OCS system has remained unaffected by viruses that have so occupied the news and seriously impacted other businesses and Internet service providers.
At the same time, our shop technicians remain busy cleaning infected machines for customers who didn't have protection software at their end, or had not kept their software current or had allowed it to expire, or had overlooked one or more machines on their network. This service is normally billed at our $85 hourly shop rate, so OfficeScan can quickly pay for itself.
Don't be caught short! Please consider adding some kind of virus protection at your end, or contact us to activate OfficeScan for you!
Dialup customers. Unfortunately, OfficeScan is not available for dialup subscribers since a full-time connection is required and the regular automated pattern file updates are sometimes fairly large. Please contact our office if you're interested in upgrading from dialup to wireless.
Disclaimer. The centralized OACYS Security Services (email virus scanning, email spam filtering, web content filtering, wireless firewall, and OfficeScan services) are extremely efficient and each blocks a very high percentage of its intended traffic. All but the optional OfficeScan are free to our subscribers, and spam and web content filters include individual preference controls. While all of these services are also available in other products, they are provided by OACYS in a centralized bundle as an additional value to our customers, which reduces their need to manage multiple different and sometimes conflicting products and renewals and update procedures. But despite the efficiency of our services and the dramatic reduction in risk they provide, they are not warranted to be 100% effective 100% of the time, the Internet is simply far too vast, nebulous, and constantly changeable to make any such claims or assurances realistic. OACYS can therefore bear no liability for any inconvenience, loss of data or down time or other damages, or possible costs to repair any problems related to the types of traffic these services are intended to filter or block.
